It's a longshot, but I had the end of the hydraulic ram that connects to the top break a while back -- the top still went up and down but slowly and crookedly.
Also, is the valve (accessible from the trunk) all the way turned? One way it bypasses the hydraulics so you can open and close it by hand, the other way the pump drives the rams. I'm fairly sure it's a 90 degree turn between the two settings.
