Long story short: Finally finished the engine rebuild for my black '85 900T. Driving it home last week with some 385 miles into the break-in period (has not been driven hard...yet) and she stalls out. i coast off the road onto a side street and give it a crank.... whirlllll-ing! *sounds like no compression. (hey Thanks AAA. and i had it towed to the shop that evening)
So today: Sure enough to my suspicion i got around to pulling the valve cover off and there is the intake cam timing-mark staring up at me and the exhaust cam timing-mark no where to be seen. *Gulp. A little further inspection and I am very displeased to find that the (brand new Scan-Tech. with >400 miles normal driving) exhaust cam sprocket has sheared from its index key (the exhaust cam is no longer spinning while the engine cranks)
So.
My question is: WTF?!
But seriously: how unlucky am I?
But the real question is: How worried should I be about the exhaust valves (of my freshly rebuilt cylinder head) being bent?
I am hoping that when the sprocket key sheared off, the cam came to rest in a spot that would prevent the valves from contacting the piston crowns.
This ever happen to anyone else?
I'm thinking I should put the O.E./SAAB cam sprockets back on. and give it a try. ideas? opinions? prayers?
