As Simon says, start with the simple stuff, it could well be an exhaust problem or something like that. More detective work will be helpful but your brief description doesn't give the impression of a gearbox problem. When you are standing still with the clutch depressed there should be nothing moving inside the transmission at all (if the clutch is working right). The Townsend reverse fix won't cause a problem like you are describing. It makes only a limited change in the extreme locations of the reverse idler.
