better heat dissipation down the core of the valve (the sodium actually melts inside the valve. sodium filled valves are not that unusual.
Sodium is very reactive, so when you dispose of one, you have to be somewhat careful. iirc a suggested process is to drill a hole down the center (drill out the sodium) and toss the remnant of the valve into a bucket of water from a distance (sodium reacts strongly with water).
