No kidding! That plane was incredible. I remember messing around the EAA museum in Oshkosh when I was a kid and we used to fly out there and sleep under the wing of my dad's plane. Pete was such a VIP for donating it that they put him up in the performer's tent at the airshows and I got to tag along and meet all my heroes. Pete was a world-reknown neurologist famous for creating a surgical procedure for curing epileptic seizures. Plus, he married the grand-daughter of Charles Kettering who apparently invented all sorts of car parts still in use today. Married into money. But get this, most of his Bugattis he bought in the '70s for almost nothing. The type 57sc Atlantic, for example was a two of a kind car in the world. Ralph Lauren owns the other one. Pete bought his for $59k and owned it for about 40 years. About 5 years ago, it won Best in Show at the Pebble Beach Auto Show and later was sold at auction for $32 million!! My dad and I used to bomb all over in that car. I still have pics of my sister asleep in the back seat. Now it's locked up in some museum somewhere.
The airplane was incredible. Pete was known for finding stuff like that in his spare time. He once found a WWII Jap Zero on some Pacific island somewhere and donated it to the Smithsonian. He also had a 4-masted schooner at one point. Crazy the life you can have when you marry into money and then become a brain surgeon. He was an awesome guy tho. He went to Dartmouth back in the early 50s. I met one of his room mates once that said he disappeared one year and came back the next semester having become a famous water skier. His wife's family was all snooty and didn't want their daughter marrying a rap-scallion like him with no prospects. So they took off together and eloped. She still got ahold of the family fortune, so it must have worked out in the end. He was always trying to convince me to become a doctor, but it wasn't my thing. He would probably disown me now if he knew I collected Saabs. haha.
