I agree that it is hard to make an SPG look better... but was that the intent? I think what they are trying is to make a NG9-5 sort of morph into a 900, perhaps to visualize what a modern car based on the c900 could look like? Would have been better to start with the 9-5 though rather than a buick (eg ditch the chrome on the A pillar)...
I don't think this is a terribly strong result. The leaked grainy photo from Saab actually works better for me... This one has an awkward roof line and hatch line that lacks the subtle concavity of the classic (the back end is just too "heavy"). It also keeps the one minor stylistic downside of the c900 for me: the mismatch in creases front to back. Ie the rear has hard square edges and the front is soft, curved, and highly aerodynamic. I don't know if that was for technical reasons (metalworking) or just something that suited the era, and I will admit, I'm not sure *how* one would soften the rear without making it into a jelly bean or less practical... a whale tail helps a lot... imho, aesthetically, the front end of a c900 is brilliant, and the rear end of a late model 9000 hatch is brilliant. (I sometimes wonder what it might look like to weld the 2 together... a la Clarkson et al.)
Imho the 911 or the c900 are icons, and building new models that echo the previous generations is good. In fact, imho, that is one of the biggest reasons for Saab's downfall - loss of that over the GM years. But obviously a new model will not look identical to the old... you look at a 1970's 911 and a 2012 911, and the 2012 is clearly more modern, but they are also clearly the same car... one might like the 1970's porsche better aesthetically, but even so, it wouldn't make much sense to still make them look like that today... 1970's 99 vs 2010 9-3? well not so much... 2002 was about the end of the resemblance... not to say the ng9-3 is bad or anything, but it competed in a big sea of sedans...
