When we were kids and climbed in the backyard pine trees, my mom always had us stick our hands into the stoveside bacon fat can and then grab a bar of soap. Melted the pitch right away.
Works the same for auto grime, paint etc. Bacon fat or any vegetable oil. I usually these days use a little liquid dish soap, it cuts the bacon fat better than soap.
Obviously the household isn't entirely PC even today.
