I had a '90 vert that made a lot of noise and I just let it be. It never caused a problem. Katrina got it after a few years saving me all that wasted work. You can also feed a new chain (open ended) by removing the cam cover and chain tensioner. Close the new chain with a master-link,set the timing marks, close it up and drive it 'til the transmission breaks. I've only seen one broken chain since they came out with the '99. Grooves in guides never hurt anything for me and I've never seen a chain that was too tight. I've got an '85 turbo with almost 400,000 mi. ( replaced bearings and seals when the transmissions broke but engine still runs great)(only one set of bearings and seals)
