Most if not all '90 SPGs were shipped to California where the exhaust emissions standards required an EGR (exhaust gas recirculation) system. That system recirculated the exhaust gasses back into the intake manifold. There is a valve under the intake manifold that freezes up and causes that bad idle. Removal of the EGR system will solve your problem.
First check to see if you still have it. If so, there will be a metal hose with a thin coil running around it. The hose goes from exhaust manifold to intake manifold past the front of the engine. That needs to be removed and the holes need to be plugged (non EGR cars have the plug bolts). Vacuum lines need to be plugged and then you will have to switch your ECU computer. It's under the carpeting on the wall just in front of the passenger door under the dash. Yours should be a jetronic with serial number ending in 582. You will need to find either a 585 or a 948. Without this switch your car will run fine, but a check engine light will always be on.
Once all this is done, your idle will be rock solid.
If you do not have EGR then it is something else and it will be the first non-EGR '90 SPG that ive seen.
