Funny, I don't remember it turning at all, and how could it? It needs to stay locked in one position to resist your twisting as you turn knob on and off - - there are (brittle) plastic tabs that fit into notches that lock it in position.
And just how are you to push it from the front, unless you remove say the speaker grill and have tiny hands?
So sorry, I disagree with tweetie on both points.
Grab the straight piece that's the indicator of where the knob is turned to, with a pair of pliers or vise grips, and pull straight out and the whole switch should come out of the dash. Then the wires all plug onto it with one "multiplug" at the back. Wiggle and pull and that should come off yours and then plug it onto the new one and push it all back into the dash, so the I think it's three plastic catches line up with three notches that hold it in place.
