Last Summer (2011) I drove my '90 (base model) from Loveland, CO to Tucson, AZ to scoop up my son & all of his belongings & drag it all back home. Last Summer I had about 266k miles on the car, & the trip was going to be roughly 2,000 miles in 3 days. I had made the same trip the previous Spring (2010), but took a leisurely 8 days since I was out of work at the time.

This time I was working & it was Father's Day weekend, so the plan was made:
1) Friday: Drive from Loveland to Tucson, stay in a cheap hotel.
2) Saturday: Cram the car full of life's debris & drive to Prescott to take my dad out to dinner & stay overnight.
3) Sunday: Drive from Prescott to Loveland.

Of course, the car performed flawlessly. Yes, unexpected things can always occur, but regular maintenance provides immeasurable peace of mind. A week before the trip the accelerator cable broke, the wire having frayed itself where it enters the housing past the firewall. Since I couldn't find this part from any vendor, I made my own from a bicycle brake cable & housing.

On the way back home, the long mountain passes, combined with two adults & about 600 lbs of cra.... uh, 'stuff' ...really taxed the car's cooling capabilities. I was running full A/C & full heater, climbing desert mountains in the blistering Summer sun. The car made it fine, but the A/C died about a week later.

The car now has about 272k miles on it & runs better than when I bought it 14 yrs ago from a college student who wasn't taking care of it. Cosmetically, it needs some TLC, & the A/C is still dead. After the trip my cousin confided that he was worried I'd be stranded out in the middle of nowhere with such an old vehicle. But then, he's used to swapping vehicles fairly regularly & letting his shop do the maintenance.

He's not a Saab guy...
