easy repair on the thingy Posted by Notnoel [Email] (#23) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Notnoel) on Wed, 24 Oct 2012 07:11:05 In Reply to: Re: What's that little thingy called?, Gigantor [Profile/Gallery] , Tue, 23 Oct 2012 19:38:58 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
Slacken the cable and clean both sides of the break with goof-off or similar product to remove all oils. Use super glue and hold the pieces together while continually moving the cable back and forth to keep the pathway open and clear.
If you want to retain the ability to adjust the cable, take a small paintbrush and paint the thread where it broke with penetrating oil, but don't get any on the top of the adjustment "nut". Then get some epoxy putty, blend the two parts, and roll it out into a thin string(1/8-1/4" thick). Then, carefully wrap the oily threads being sure that the sides of the epoxy putty string don't get oil on them. Once in place, gently work the top of the putty into a smooth surface and let it set up. You can later add more epoxy and really fuse it to the adjusting nut.
That should basically splint the repair, providing the strength over the broken area that the super glue won't provide while still retaining the functionality of the part. I did this and it lasted about 4 years until the cable started to fray (for other reasons), and I replaced it.
