me vs. the shifter

Trying to fix my shifter issues.
When I go to shift into 5th gear is goes a little far to the right and the reverse light will light up momentarily. Although there are worse things I find it a little too quirky.
Today I tried to adjust the shifter by pulling it out nd adjusting the pin underneath it by taking the cotter pin and getting greasy. Reinstalled, a turn here or there and it was getting a little too tight on the shifter ball but the 5th gear shifting far to the right was still there. Hmmm. What to do? I do notice that I don't need to pull on the collar to get the shifte into reverse, oddly. I still need to put the car into reverse to pull the key out, however. I was going to try to do the third gear adjustment by loosening the bolt on the shift likage and puttting a drill bit into the aligment holes; however the alignment holes are already aligned so I thought it would be a wasted effort. Question: could my shifter be ''old'' and need replaced? Does anyone have an easy fix that comes to mind? Thanks for your input!
I recently replaced the shifter bushing in the housing and got rid of the ''wobbly wobbly''.
