...but I've never gotten to it. The idea:
Wrap wire around inside the knob, pulling together the split area so it's back where it was pre-split. I think I envisioned cutting a little plastic away to give me a place to wrap. Use florists' wire, cadged from an old Christmas wreath or bought from a craft store. Wrap multiple times, and twist ends so it won't come loose.
Then fill all the voids in the interior of the knob, except where the steel tang is supposed to go, with two-part epoxy, so the knob can't crack apart again because it will have no place to crack into. This also embeds the steel wire wrap that you put around the cracked place.
I think, or am I dreaming, that there was a spring steel clip also involved, that goes between the tang and the knob. If so, needs to be pried out before the repair, then reinserted once the epoxy has hardened.
