As noted, the roof panel is completely different. Unusually for Saab, there is no common roof panel or structure between SR cars and non-SR cars, so you cannot just blast a hole in the roof, and bolt it up.
The sunroof is a tray that bolts up via six screws to the roof. Other than the motor for an electric SR, all the mechanics are in the tray. With an electric SR, the motor lives in the space just forward of the rear bumper, to the right of the spare tire. You have to bend down to look in and see it. The cables run up the "C" pillars. (BTW, if the car is a 1979 or 1980, there is no place for the motor...)
There are four drains, one at each corner.
The only logical way to do it is to cut the roof off at the pillars, not by cutting the center of the roof out. This begs the question of the safety of the re-welded car, and the longevity of it, rust being the primary concern.
The sunroof is nice, but driving a 1990 base for a few years got me used to being without. The added headroom was nice, too. I also find that with my 9000, and the three 9-5s I have owned, I really didn't/don't open the SR all the way very often, not nearly as often than when I had my C900. For me, that's because of two things: 1) most of my C900s didn't have working AC, 2) the SR in the 9000 and later is further back on the roof, making it more annoying when fully open. But I love the tilt function...
If the car you are considering has a rust-free chassis, THAT is far, far, more valuable these days than a sunroof, and you'll likely only screw it up terribly by trying to install one.
