I stripped it, then blasted it with a medium grit black beauty blast media. The reason that the original paint comes off in big flakes is that there is no tooth to the aluminum. Paint doesn't stick very well to bare aluminum. If you've ever tried to paint the polished lips on alloy wheels, you'll know what I'm talking about. After blasting and cleaning, I give it a quick coat of bonding agent and follow up with VHT wrinkle finish paint--following the instructions on the can. It helps to get a good wrinkle if you heat the part as it's drying. I usually put it on one of the radiators in the house if I'm doing it in the winter. Putting it out in the sun will do the trick in the summer. After it dries, I just sand the pant off the raised parts. I've considered putting some kind of a clear sealer on the bare parts after sanding, but haven't actually followed through.
