But it was only happening during cranking, when solenoid was actuated. The fat braided wire from solenoid into starter was too short and pulled against its rubber insulating bushing and eventually cut through. It was a near-new rebuilt starter that came with the car when I bought it.
Your ignition key switch isn't balky and didn't stick on "start," did it? That makes some of the dash lights, etc. not work because they don't normally work when you are cranking. It also leaves starter engaged with the flywheel while engine is revving full, damages or destroys starter "bendix", and rest of starter, and makes a stinky hot electrical smell. It can happen for a little while and your starter may be all right after, but if it goes on you'll need a new starter, as well as serious attention to your key cylinder to clean out whatever it is that makes it stick.
This happened to me a couple of times, even after I was aware of the danger and thought I was sensitive to it. I got out of it on the cheap with a junkyard starter. There's also a little tinkling noise you can hear as you drive, if it's not too noisy.
If your starter is fried you'll need a new one anyways but also consider paying attention to your ignition lock cylinder.
