I would suggest changing to a synthetic manual transmission oil, preferably Redline MTL. Synthetics tend to be more fluid at low temps than regular gear lubes or 10-30 motor oil, which is what Saab originally specified.
If I remember correctly, the 91-93 transmission had no drain plug, nor does the owners manual indicate any required service or replacement. The oil can being drained by removing the rear differential cover. If you are not comfortable doing this (or it's just too damned cold out) I'd suggest asking your mechanic. It should under $100 oil and labor included.
Regarding the advisability of changing fluids in older cars I can only speak from my own experience. As a matter of course I change all the fluids when I buy a car: motor and transmission oils, brake and clutch fluids and the coolant. This provides a baseline for future maintenance, as well as refreshing the fluids. All my 900s had over 75,000 miles when purchased, including my current driver, a '93 CE which I bought with 133,000 miles, promptly changed transmission oil, and which is happily motoring at 170,000. I have yet to lose a Saab to transmission failure.
As always, YMMV.
Good Luck
