'85 to '87 should work. The big changes are:
Speedo numbering - the drive gear in the transmission never changed, though, so the electronics in the speedo will always make the needle point to the right speed.
Speedo drive - Cars with LH 2.4 or 2.4.2 use a different speedo cable than cars with older injection schemes. The transmission end never changed, so you can always swap a speedo as long as you've got a matching cable.
Odometer - Don't remember offhand if it's the regular odo or the trip odo, but one of them moved in around '88. Obviously if you're swapping the whole speedometer this isn't an issue... it's just a problem if you're swapping the face.
Speed sensor output: Concurrent with the speedo drive, Saab changed the speed sensor output. Earlier cars had three 2-pin connectors. Later cars have a 3-pin connector. The output of the sensor never changed, as evident by the fact the cruise control modules are interchangeable across these years.
Tachometer: There was a 8k tach in the very early years, and a later 7k tach. They are interchangeable, just visually different.
Fuel gauge: The anti-slosh circuitry changed in '91 or '92. You can fry the gauge by swapping across this cutoff.
Turbo gauge: Changed calibration a couple times. I believe in '81.5 (with APC), and again around the mid/late '80s, I believe with the introduction of the 165hp SPG, or maybe it was the discontinuation of 8v turbos. Not a big deal since it's not visually calibrated anyway.
Printed circuits: The flexible circuits on the back changed numerous times - probably once every other year if not every year. The dimmer circuit changed, the warning lights changed, there were changed with gauges, etc. Since the gauges didn't change electrically (with the exception of the fuel gauge) you are best off just swapping gauges and reusing your printed circuit. The only time that may not work is on very early cars, or very late cars. In the mid-years ('81ish to 91ish) it pretty much always works.
I think that's the big stuff.
