Dashboard Mod to keep right hand warm Posted by Notnoel [Email] (#23) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Notnoel) on Sun, 10 Feb 2013 18:23:40 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
As a convertible owner that drives his car even when the weather is chilly outside, I've always loved how the left vent keeps that hand nice and toasty, but hated how cold my right hand would get. So, I've engineered this simple mod so that both hands stay quite warm and comfortable.
At first I thought this would be something only convertible owners would be interested in, but since doing it a couple of weeks ago, it is something I think even the hardtop folks will like. Of course you'll need to wire a new cigarette lighter jack into the car (mine is now hidden in the back of the console cubby). It is easily accomplished in an hour or so:
1) You'll need to obtain some ventilation hose (or you can use the hose to the right side, side window defroster). You will also need a vent (to cut to size); these are cheap on FleaBay or at a junkyard.
2) Cut off the very back back of the cigarette lighter. You can either remove the dash to do this (a PITA), or do as I did and use a dremel tool with a cutting disk.
3) Remove the console and the bolster to give you access to the heater box. The you can either disconnect the right-side hose (which is what I did), or use a 3/4 inch PVC plumber's "T" to split the airflow. I haven't had any issues with the right side window fogging since I did this.
4) Run the hose back over the main ventilation run (the very large metal cross-bar, under the radio, and hook it into the back of the cigarette lighter housing (that you cut the back off in step 1). It protrudes about an inch and the hose fits over it nicely. Put the bolster and console back in. At this point hot air comes out and shoots straight into the cabin.
5) For the last part you need to cut the rigid vent part to size to fit into the square opening. In the picture you'll see my first attempt. If you just cut it square, it won't blow onto your hand. You'll have to pull it out slightly to aim it properly. I've got another vent I am going to butcher to get it just right - the vanes need to point directly at your hand (duh!)
The pictures below will give you an idea of what is involved and how it looks.
