Re-use crush sleeve? Transmission guys?

Hi all,
I've got an old (pre-'89) transmission, which has the small pinion bearing and higher ratio ring and pinion. I plan on rebuilding it at some point (love the high gears I get with it and #8 primaries), so I'm scrounging for parts. One of the parts I can't find anywhere is the crush sleeve, which goes between the two pinion bearings and determines pre-load based on torque of the pinion nut.
I have a friend, a French Canadian guy in New Hampshire who is really good with the very old 900s, tell me I could re-use the crush sleeve, first putting it on a pipe and then hammering it back into its original shape, then crushing it again. Doesn't seem like it would give the same preload the second time around, but then I'm no metallurgist. What do transmission guys do? Any secret sources for early-style crush sleeves? The dealer network is all out.
Thanks!
S
