in central California.
Our local "used to be u-pull-it now we do it quick and dirty for you" place had a '91 Beryl Green 900 SPG in there in December. Only 137,xxx miles on it.
Good-bye SPG skirts and rails, buffalo grey interior, dash, 140 mph instrument cluster, engine, distributor, ABS stuff, glass, hood, hatch, all gone to the crusher.
Car had been in a front end collision, and the rad support and front bumper were trashed. The rest of the car looked fine, hood was fine, and the guy said they had driven it in. It had 2 other cars on top of it so the roof was just a little buckled in the middle, but not the edges.
I asked if they would sell the car complete. Sure, no problem, $650 dollars (no wheels) and it would be mine. No, they would not allow me to pull the parts there and give them back whatever I didn't want. I have no storage, and I though this would work well for them, they still get scrap value after all.
The sum total of parts I got were the headliner, some quarter window gaskets, a few electronic bits, and screw covers and the like.
It was Christmas, and I was leaving town, so I asked the guy if they got even close to ready to crush it to give me a call. No call, so I figured all was good.
Went there in early March, and no car. Not even the '86 trashed interior 4 door they'd had was there any more. The guy said "oh yeah, you're the crazy guy that wanted to remove the headliner himself. Naw, that car was crushed long ago..."
I felt physically sick to my stomach. I wanted to cry and beat the crap out of him at the same time. Yet no phone call, so much for "local" friendly service...
What do they have there still? Old american stuff that's been there for years, a plethora of late '80's-early '90's BMWs, and tons of SUVs. No cars that are not common, and would be needed. Even after I'd told him after the last one they should hang on to the C900s as they were getting scarce.
They also crushed a '90 900T with a good white hood (I need), and Saab roof racks, AND a Saab factory receiver hitch complete with factory wiring.
I have no faith in our local Steelhead Recyclers. It makes me sad all over again just to type this out!
