The spring is part of the "Lock in Reverse" configuration just in front of and below the electrical relay. The cylinder only goes in in one position so if you align the gear to receive the cylinder it is in the correct position. But you do have to set the gear that it drives turning the ignition relay if you have taken that apart. The first tooth (clockwise rotation) of the cylinder gear fits into the last tooth (counter clockwise rotation) of the relay gear.
