The 5-doors are pretty rare in the US. You get the best of the sedans with the best of the hatchback design. Pretty cool cars.
I once saw a 5-door outfitted with the post-86 900 trim and it looked fantastic.
1979 was still using the B engine so waterpump jobs are fewer in number but pretty big deals in requiring the correct tool to press in the new unit when needed. I did a bunch on 99s back in the day without any problems (and then had a hell of a time on the last one that I did on my own car).
The transmission is probably a 4-speed. Bad in that you don't have a fifth gear, good in that they're probably a little tougher than the 5-speeds.
Mechanical/CIS fuel injection: a lot different than the LH Jetronic that the later 900s used. I liked CIS but you'll get varying opinions. Parts may be getting harder to obtain for this type; there's a good deal of information on this board regarding CIS.
What to offer? What'll the (local) market bear? Someone sent a link here on the board recently to a 5-door in Montanna selling for something like $500. That would be a decent starting area, I think.
Good luck.
