87 manual pedals won't fit my 91 ABS automatic! Posted by DET17 [Email] (#1254) [Profile/Gallery] (more from DET17) on Wed, 22 May 2013 19:35:29 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
Well, let's say they don't fit CORRECTLY. Despite the "how to" article by Mr. Jeter stating that all years are interchangeable.....suspect he wrote it well before the ABS cars came out.
I pulled the auto brake pedal, leaving the 6 bolt sheet metal framework up against the firewall. I compared the one I pulled from my 87T donor, and the centers between brake pivot and clutch pivot appear to be identical (tape measure). What IS different is the bracing in the old unit would interfere with the aluminum boss of the ABS brakes master which protrude into the cabin. Therefore, I used the original 91 piece.
Clutch pedal fits the 91 mount perfect, lines up AOK with the clutch master. However the old 87 brake pedal is no good....appears to be about 1.5 inches lower than the clutch. It also seems to bump into the cruise control vac. diaphram, so I am fairly sure this is the issue. However when I measure the auto brake pedal from pivot to pad, it seems to be only about 1/2" longer than the 91 pedal.
Thought I read years back that all years (79-93) clutch pedals were exactly same.....this one was an eEuro replacement I bought some time ago.
Wisdom? Am I going to have to find a 90+ setup in the boneyard to get it to work proper in my 91T? Or do I just need a 90+ ABS manual brake pedal?
