Steve Y, your symptoms match an experience I had a couple of months ago just outside the parking garage at my job.
My radio was playing normally on the commute into work when its face started flickering/fading and the back speakers cut out about three stoplights/ 1 mile before the trip end.
I knew something was up and switched the radio off (I should have killed the headlights too) and prepared for a quick sprint transit through the last stoplight into the garage. But the car died right as I turned into the lot.
The battery was dead, would not turn the starter over (I didn't check with a multimeter yet). Let the car sit for about five minutes while examining the situation and found the problem - a crimp connector on the alternator ground had failed.
After about five minutes the battery had recovered enough for me to start the car and make it to a parking spot (but just barely). And some salvaged wiring allowed me to fashion an emergency alternator ground that let me get home that night for a final repair the following weekend.
I bet your battery isn't getting a charge from the alternator. The car acts very oddly when you're working with a dead/near-dead battery.
