Obviously this is not a Saab, but I thought maybe someone out there would have seen something like this before.
This is the valley of a Cadillac 429, under the pushrod cover. When I removed the pushrod cover there looked to be pools of sludgy oil accumulated around the base of the pushrods, more or less like it looks to the right. When I went to wipe up the sludge, I found it was actually a thin layer of oil sitting on top of a mound of greyish beige goo.
The goo spreads easily, goes everywhere. It has the consistency of anti-seize and spreads like anti-seize. You can see the towel easily smeared it around. I was completely unsuccessful at cleaning it up - I removed most of it, but even after repeated applications of brake cleaner and carb cleaner, it still left a thin film... just like anti-seize. The only thing about it that's not like anti-seize is the color. It's a beige/clay color, like one half of JB Weld.
I've had the car for three years and done three oil changes on it and never found anything like it in the oil. Since it took a towel to disturb oil pools on top of it (that is, has zero effect), I imagine it ended up here and got stuck.
Anyone wanna fathom a guess?
