So I've had the winter beater parked in the garage for a month and recently cut off the exhaust system, and I'm in the process of removing the heat shield - just the 2 bolts under the car and the 1 under the wiring harness from the inside left... in the process of accessing this one, I have the carpet up and I've noticed that the "sponge" underlay layer is soaking wet and rust stained - like I've had it out of the car to dry for a week and it's still wet!

Do any of you just remove these sponges all together? is there any real need for it?

Also, the layer under that which is somehow adhered to the floor... is there any need for that? I am suspicious wrt the integrity of the floor pans given the amount of water still in there after being parked indoors for a month! I have to wonder if this was tracked in through the door or seeped through a hole somewhere. the car is a bit rusty but not atrocious (yet)... I'd rather nip problems in the bud while I still can. I'm going to be doing some por soon anyway... want to keep it going: it is a fantastic winter beater!
