There's a guy selling a couple c900 NA hatchbacks not too far away from me. both manuals. probably some rust but photos look ok. I think there are 2 types of c900's: collector cars (or near collector cars with some do-able work) and daily drivers that are rusting past the point of being viable collector cars but still lots of life in them (like our winter beater has been and hopefully will continue to be)...
That second group of cars still exists and do come up for sale. More and more, c900 owners are fanatics and not the general populace so the "ratty but solid with minor repairs" cars are becoming fewer, but they are out there. A cosmetically rusty NA can be driven for a long long time with minor DIY paint and rust repair (that collectors would frown upon)... these cars are unbelievably tough... sure the NA's don't go as fast as the turbos, but they still handle great + are fun around town.
I'd say find a solid but cosmetically undesirable one for winter and keep the SPG for summer! I agree, there is little around that's newer that is as much fun... basically the next best thing is the GM saabs imho... used examples of those are cheap, and make decent winter beaters... cheaper to keep a c900 going though...
good luck!
