Sandy,
why don't you use capitals? I'm Not Talking You Should Do It In A Pompous Way, but it is much easier to read it if it starts a new sentence in a capital letter.
But back to your budlight... batt light. Have a look at the diagram of the battery charging system: the battery indicator light is grounded thru the voltage regulator. If the voltage regulator is bad - either mechanically, i.e. worn brushes, or electrically - there will be no voltage (read: potential difference) at the bulb terminals, so there will be no current, and thus - no light from the bulb.
Or another version: your battery bulb may be no more. Kaputt.
Or your alternator is no longer grounded, but I'm sure that you already have double-checked alternator grounding wire, incl. its terminals.
By the way, how's your battery right now? I mean do you feel it's being charged? W/o a live batt light or with a dead VR your alternator will not operate as a battery charging device (*) and your battery will quickly drain out. If you made your 300 miles trip in a single run then it says nothing on my question since you might start it with a healthy bulb which burned out right before you shut off the engine 50 miles ago on the last gas station.

With a dead batt light your alternator may stil become (self-)energized and enter an operating state if you rev it up high enough because of rotor's retentivity. But there's no guarantee on this effect, it may happen to you or may not.
