Pete, One thing that makes a transmission pop out of gear is that it's not fully in gear in the first place and that can happen when the stick shift isn't talking to the gearbox right. If you have loose or worn motor mounts or slop anywhere in the shift linkage you need to correct that before you decide that the transmission has internal problems. Check that the shifter box is bolted tightly to the floor. Adjust the linkage as per the Saab manual procedure too. Just being out of adjustment can prevent full engagement of one or more gears. Be sure that it is fully topped up with the appropriate oil too. If you get all that stuff checked and corrected and it still pops out of third gear that suggests that a rebuild is in order. As a last resort you can check the detent ball and spring but that will usually cause problems with all the gears not just one of them.
