Well...I forgot about that transaxle stud, but wouldn't there be enough room to wiggle the timing cover out/up/off after the oil pump is removed? I do see the task list growing (worms escaping from the can as it were)...& hope the timing chain guides look healthy enough so I feel ok leaving them be. Do you have an opinion about the possibility of a new chain accelerating wear on the old guides? Perhaps the benefit of a new chain outweighs the risk?
Re the diy valve stem seal install, I already read your 9/2011 post explaining this (notes taken). My anxiety is over actually disturbing the valve's long established orientation with the seats & creating a leak where there had been none...or worse, ending up with a cracked seat or valve head due to a high spot on either mating surface. I've lapped valves on lawnmower engines & an old motorcycle...all of which were easy to disa/reassemble & were non-essential machines. I need to get this car up & running by the end of the week & am fearful of undertaking more than I have time for...especially if something goes wrong....but, the car sees 20k per year & I don't want to cut corners.
Before I over think things, I'll drain out the coolant & run the motor for a minute or two w/a gallon of diesel &/or atf (have both) in the crankcase to flush out the muddy oil, then pull the head & poke around, then call a few machine shops for some estimates. I still have some reading to get through & put together a parts order. There goes another worm.
Thanks
