we burnt a valve on the highway once in a 900 without tools. luckily we were close to our destination and a good non-saab indy. We got a rental, ordered parts from the dealer (this was before I had found out about eeuro) and had him put it back together. Now I carry tools and a few spare parts when on road trips, but those parts are for the 9-5 (key hoses, belt, CPS, etc). With kids, we don't take the 900's too far anymore, the 9-5 is a better touring car and there is significantly less risk of something irreplaceable breaking in the middle of nowhere... I wouldn't want to have to decide what to do with an aging 900 with a dead tranny too far from home to tow now that good replacement 900's are starting to become harder to find!
Anyway, with fast shipping from online sources, I'd say carry tools, a few key parts for common things that can strand you and are hard to get... otherwise, no big deal. Maybe as much as a fuel pump, but I wouldn't carry a spare tranny in the trunk!
