I found something odd with this transmission I recently pulled, and I'm not sure what to make of it. I took the passengers side CV axle out in the process of pulling the engine/transmission and found the skinny, outer most shaft, that bolts into the wheel bearing, had sheered clean off of the axle. Upon closer inspection, the teeth that run the length of the shaft seemed to of sheered in the forward motion of the axle, right at its base. So it tells me it was put under great force going forward when it sheered off. The tripod bearing stayed in the transmission cups as the circlip had fallen off. The engine was tested at 200 psi, so I figure the previous owner liked to drag race.

The engine looked like it had seen some attention, so I pulled off the side and rear inspection ports to look at the gears in the transmission. Plus I was curious to see if the transmission locked up. The components inside looked new, with a lick of rebuilders paint on the reverse arm. But there was hardly any oil inside. The rear plate was made of steel, and had a large patch of rust on the inside, which makes me think the previous owner ran it without much oil in it. I put it in each gear and engaged the starter and found everything spinning as it should. The thing is, it needs a mallet or some leverage to take it out of the gears. Is it possible the transmission locked up from lack of oil and ruined the components that allows it to shift in and out of the gears? What about if I were to put oil in it, would it get better? What about if I used the guts for a transmission rebuild?
