I was in a similar situation.
Had an '85 SPG, had twins, less time for the car. This car is perfect for kids - plenty of room, extremely safe. Been using 900's as daily drivers all through my kids schooling. Now they're in college and I never felt like I needed a larger car.
My '85 came from NY so it always had rust issues but I always found time for the things that came along the way - brakes, starter, radiator, fuel pump etc. These cars are relatively cheap to maintain despite their age and failing components and are easy enough for almost anyone to work on.
When the tranny went, I bought a black and tan '89 turbo in good shape for $500, swapped the bumpers, panels and e-codes and turned it into my "85 SPG.
Sadly, now my '85 holds the upgrades for my '89 and will be sold once I finish it but I do feel like I personally recycled much of it.
