There is a very decent writeup on here, which I'm sure is linked multiple times. Might even be an article here? Check for my posts back in Jan/Feb and someone sent me the link. Bentley has excellent information on how to remove the powertrain and how to separate. IMO you can't do this work justice without the Bentley Bible.
First off, you are in for a BIG amount of labor. The pics don't do it justice. I did nearly what you are considering....put my 91 Engine onto an 87 5 speed. It will cost you TWICE what you expect and take THREE times as long. I promise.
If you want a link to my photo album, it shows everything you must do, along with a million other upgrades I did at the same time to avoid future failures. Shoot me an email and I'll be happy to link you to my pics.
The one thing I didn't do was pull the 5 speed off and leave the engine installed. HOWEVER, after seeing how the front crossmember removes with relative ease, I would certainly go this route if the engine didn't need some service (head gasket, crank front/rear seals).
