Ready to give up and take it to a shop, hesitation and Posted by Ilovemountains [Email] (#1318) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Ilovemountains) on Tue, 19 Nov 2013 15:33:18 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
I’m ready to take the 86 16v NA to a shop; I don’t know what else to try… I replaced the headgasket, new catalytic converter, mid pipe along with a new Bosal turbo muffler and tail pipe, new Bosch 02 sensor, rebuilt the injectors with new O rings and caps, new plugs, wires, cap, rotor, all new gaskets for the head gasket job etc.
Background: Its an 86 900s 16v 5 speed, 145,000 miles. The head was pressure tested and cleaned, all new Elring gaskets, all the parts above are new, the exhaust system was totally plugged with fiberglass batting so I just replaced it all last night. The car had sat for about 3 years before I bought it, I have no idea if it ran properly when parked so I could be chasing a ghost! The intake is from an 88 but has my stock 86 throttle body, the injectors are also from the 88 as the rebuild kits from E Euro didn’t work with the Bosch yellow injectors that were in the car. I have the ECU from the 88 parts car, that’s about the only thing I haven’t changed!
The car starts right up but will not take fuel, if you roll the throttle it just gasps for air and will eventually rev but something is wrong… It idles OK, though it’s a little erratic up and down, probably a hundred RPMS at a time… I can drive it and it seems to pull fine when it wants to but then misses and hesitates other times. The MAF is used from a parts car, if I put the original one back on the car it runs terribly, it actually sounds like the head gasket it blown again! I think I killed it by feeding it starting fluid after the HG blew just to get it started to move it. I did have an issue with it after putting the top end back on, the Bentley manual had the firing order off by 180 degrees on the cap, before I realized this I had a few backfires into the intake, strong enough to pop the vacuum line out of the intake for the brake booster! Is it possible that could have killed the MAF? Any ideas?
I have a new fuel filter to install but really don’t know what else to try short of finding another MAF. The new Bosal turbo muffler and tailpipe sound great, very very deep and sporty, it has to be flowing better than ever! Should I pull the battery to let things reset now that the exhaust isnt plugged and it has a new 02 sensor??? Arrrrgghhhhhhhhhh saab story!
