Did you read the actual test, though? The actual filtering performance difference between a K&N and a factory filter was almost nil, while they do actually flow better. Obviously there is no free lunch - at the extreme more flow certainly equals less filter - but the question remains as to whether the loss in filtering causes any damage AND whether the increase in flow creates any benefit. I don't think you can rely on a color test as definitive evidence of the former any more than you can rely on the butt dyno as evidence of the latter. At the same time, K&N *has* produced quantitative analysis of the improvement, and nobody has produced any analysis of the detriment. Draw whatever conclusions you'd like.
I have been using K&N filters for almost 20 years now (Jesus I'm old) and I do continue to use them. IME, anecdotally, I can't say I detect any improvement - OR LOSS - in performance with them either. However, it sure is nice not having to buy filters, and it sure is nice not futzing with the airbox, and the factory airbox largely doesn't work with any of my intake setups anyway....
I've never had an engine fail, nor have I had electronics fail, in any way that could even remotely be attributed to a K&N or the oil. EXCEPT ONCE, at the 24 Hours of Lemons which turned out to be as much dirt track racing as anything else, and the K&N ended up being completely coated in dirt and dust simply as a result of exposure. After seeing it, I was really wishing there were no doubts about its filtering ability and even moreso that I'd had an airbox. ;) But, on the street, no such concerns.
All that said, I've largely switched away from K&N filters over to AEM dry filters. Don't know if they work better or worse, but cleaning them is easier and they don't use oil, so it was a primarily maintenance driven change rather than a performance driven change. Again, draw whatever conclusions you'd like. :)
