I'll add that if you just drain through the plug ( or through the diff cover ), you get 2.5 quarts out. The other .5 quart is in the front part of the trans, and you have to drain that by removing the side plate at the very front. If you are changing the type of oil you are putting in, then by all means, drain the front cover too.
Make sure you put .5 quart back in through the upper primary chain cover before you start the car, and of course the other 2.5 quarts in the main case.
I drain the main case first, then jack the left rear of the car up slightly to drain out the front side cover. You might have a tough time getting that side plate off if you have a turbo car -- the turbo support bracket has a bend in it that makes it difficult to get the side cover off -- we heat and bend a relief in all the turbo support brackets so the next time, it isn't such a dang struggle.
