The alarm systems were very popular in the U.S. in the 80s. Chirp Chirp! I don't think that crime was very high at all in Sweden at the time, but in the U.S. people installed alarms on everything! At least one state required insurance companies to offer insurance discounts on cars that had alarms installed. I think that a lot of this was driven by the growing sophistication of car audio systems, which were relatively expensive back then. Have a look at the price lists and you'll be shocked by how little you received for how much you paid. These were mostly DIN sized radios or two shaft radios that would fit in just about any car, unlike today when stealing a radio out of a VW to put into your Chrysler won't work.
Saab/Clarion radios even had an optional carrying case so that you could take your radio with you every time you left your car!
Ahhhh, those were the days... ;)
