Ok - here's the advice I got when my 900 did the same thing. Take five 6-inch pieces of wire, all gathered together and connected to a single male spade connector (we'll call this the 'head'). Crimp male spade connectors to four of the five wires. Remove the six wires from the ignition switch (visible after removing the console cover). Note their positions for future reference. Insert the 'head' into connector #30. Connect the other wires to the wires from terminals X, 15, 54, and S+ (everything except 50 - the yellow wire). This will provide power to everything. To start, touch the remaining wire to the yellow wire from terminal 50. To turn off, pull the 'head' out of the switch.
I wired an on/off switch between the 'head' and terminal 30, and a momentary contact button between the power supply and the yellow wire.
I think I got this all correct - make sure the car is in neutral before supplying power to the starter circuit - and don't us an on/off switch for the starter. And make sure none of the wires touch a ground.
Refer to the switch diagram on page 371-7 of your Bentley manual - it lays all this out well.
