You can pick up a special socket for the O2 Sensor at almost any Automotive store (Advance Auto , etc) for $5-10, IIRC. Yes you need this component for your car to run properly, and you will need the socket when you re-install the new one.
I've also found that the clearance between the side of the "bolt" part of the O2 Sensor and the cast iron elbow is often too small for the socket to fit well. Since you've already trashed the o2 sensor you have, just get it out of there, but while it is out, you might want to use a dremel tool to widen that space up a bit for future use.
