Verne, that's pretty much what I did. Got Volvo on the brain right now so let me think.....
First installed the 6mm (I guess) right there in front of the shifter. Released my barrel shifter coupling, and then from memory I let the shifter shaft "find itself"....that centering spring did the job. I think I might have put a small Phillips in the hole in the shaft, and moved it fore/aft to make damn sure it was happily on the detent. I torqued the coupling back up, and she's been happy since.
DISCLAIMER - this was a rebuild 87T trans with somewhere around 250~300K on it. I bought all the new springs, of course new pinion bearings, and perhaps a few more bits I bought from Viking Somethingorother Inc. up in CT....they specialized in SAAB gearbox parts, great folks. Did my box have a worn 1-2 shift fork? You'd have to ask an expert like CMyles....I've rebuilt 2 of these 5speeds, not planning any more!
End result...positive engagement into 5th gear. The Redline MTL helped a bit more, and the old Swede seems happy in my drop top.
Good luck! Try the shifter coupling, all you will lose is a half hour of life!
