I would pay as much as possible for an air mass meter, $300.00-500.00 as long as I could get a Bosch brand new or Bosch rebuilt.
All other rebuilt brands, I would not pay for but would accept them if the give it to me for free.
Here in CA, old Saab's are going to drop like flies due to failing smog test from bad air mass meters not being able to keep the fuel mixture rich enough and subsequently failing on high NOx readings.
I had an 88 9000T going to the scrapper less than a year ago since we could not find a good enough air mass meter for it. It passed with flying colors on the HC and CO but no matter what I tried, I could not bring the NOx down enough to make it pass.
After trying with 3 different rebuilts from my suppliers, all 3 were worse than what was on the car, I had to give up.
All AMM failures are not the same. Most fails gradually leaning out the fuel mixture more and more and you might not even think about it for years since you get used to it. It's not until you get a new one installed you realize how much power and turbo boost you have lost over the years.
I even had a 900 years ago where the clutch started to slip right after a new AMM was installed due to the extra horse powers.
