The problem you describe is actually electromechanical in nature. The pump motor itself has a copper-overlaid-phenolic commutator that, once worn away, develops "bad sectors" that don't conduct (where the copper is worn down to the phenolic). Every time you stop the car, the pump motor has a chance of landing on a bad sector. The pump will, of course, not start up if it's landed on a bad sector. So when you tap it, it jumps a bit to a spot that is OK enough to get it going again. When it's running, it won't stop because it can just "coast" through the bad sectors.
You're living on borrowed time. Replace the pump very very soon, because as wear progresses, one day hitting it won't suffice!
