WD-40 caused no start? Posted by Haskell60 [Email] (#1511) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Haskell60) on Tue, 20 May 2014 18:19:31 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
Hi, so I had a major scare today on the way home from my 1 hour work commute.
The car: 1990 SPG with EGR system (inside the body of a rust free base 900). Note - The car made it to Carlisle, PA and back from CT this past weekend with no issues.
The problem: on the way home from work today, the idle was very high, in the 3000 rpm range. I pulled over to a gas station, and sprayed liberal amounts of WD-40 over the throttle body, and the throttle cable going back to the firewall. After that, the car would crank but not start. It took about 45 minutes of trying and letting it sit, pushing in all wiring connections I could find in the engine bay, and then it finally started up, albeit begrudgingly.
I drove the remaining 1/2 hour home (during which the high idle was cured), let the car sit for a minute, then tried to start it - and it started right up. Could the WD-40 have gotten somewhere that caused the no start for almost an hour?
Thanks, Rich
