The pump may be not running for reasons other than a bad pump (relay, fuse, wiring, etc.) Up through 1988 the C900 five speed has two identical pinion bearings. In 1989 the rear bearing was enlarged. I've never seen any evidence that the pinion bearings in the '89> units lasted any longer or worked any better. The '89> units had a better rear cluster needle bearing assembly but the pinion bearings are almost always the first bearings to wear out regardless. If properly maintained and not abused the early units can run just as long as the '89> units. It all depends on how it's been treated and how many miles are on it.
