I'd just run new wires to the rear speakers, as the 22+yr old rear amp doesn't compare to any drop-in aftermarket modern amp. Adding a subwoofer amp is what you should be thinking about…not some car-rattling thing, but an 8-inch can is an awesome addition.
I ran my wires along the doors: I dunno about verts, but you can just disassemble the kick-area, and then run them under the carpet after taking that metal step off.
for the other buttons:
THe foglight slot is a good one, I find NO use for the air circulation button, and I took out the AC so that button has been repurposed too. Whatever you do for the push-button start, use heavy gauge wires, as a lot of current to turn the starter goes through this circuit.
Screw the defrosters too…not worth the hassle.
