Hi Lee,
There should really be 3 wires attached to your alternator. The small green and white that slides on a spade terminal. A larger wire that is attached by a 13mm nut to a stud sticking out of the alternator that runs over to the starter. And a med sized wire that is attached to the outer edge of the alternator and runs as a ground to the block usually to one of the 3 bolts that attach the lower alternator bracket to the block. If any of the wires are not connected the battery will not charge. I forget if you mentioned does your battery warning light illuminate when you turn the key to the on position (not running)?
