Got the call from a stranded wife - "Key bent when I went to start it at the store"
We do not have a spare key, so I went over to the store and saw the key....twisted 90 degrees and hanging on by a sliver. I drove to a locksmith close by and they said the key will break if they try to straighten it and then they cannot make a copy. The guy looked in a book and determined that if I get the serial numbers off a trunk or door lock, he could make one. I went home and found spare shifter assembly and removed the tumbler (no serial numbers found) to put into the stranded car. I could not get the ignition tumbler out at the store because the seat would need to be removed to gain access to the tumbler release pin that had a plug protecting it. Well I gently twisted the key straight and the sliver of metal was now 1/2 a sliver. I put the key in and used a screwdriver to turn the ignition - it rotated and I drove it home. Good thing I had practice removing the tumbler from the spare shifter because the tumbler needs to be turned just slightly from the off and lock position. I drilled out the protective plug and could feel the spring loaded retaining pin. Got assembly out after about 20 minutes of trying because the tumbler needed to be rotated just right. The old ignition tumbler has numbers and I will make some key next week. For now I will use the spare tumbler which has 3 spare keys for it.
